FAQ’s

— Do you offer a half-day option for 3K For All or Pre-K For All?

No we do not. Little Light believes in a full-day program for our littlest learners to increase their social emotional needs. Our 3K and Pre-K programs are all full-day schedules, from 8:00am - 2:40pm.

— Is your Nursery program a 3-K for All?

Yes. The New York City DOE’s free 3-K for All program has been implemented in our school district.

— Do you follow the public school calendar?

Our calendar is very close to the one used by the NYC public school system, but there are some variations. For instance, our winter and spring break holidays are usually a day or two longer than those of the public schools.

— How are students assessed?

Our teachers use an authentic assessment tool called the Work Sampling System to gather information and evaluate their progress in such areas as math, literacy, science, and social studies (Pre-K students are also assessed on their social and physical development). We hold parent-teacher meetings three times a year to discuss students’ progress.

— How can parents get involved in the school?

Parents are an important part of our teaching team! We invite parents to talk to their child’s teacher about ways they can help in the classroom (for instance, reading to the class during meeting time). We also have special events that involve family participation, such as our cultural sharing days, Scholastic Book Fairs, and Family Art Nights.

— Do you offer a bus service?

Unfortunately, for insurance reasons, we cannot offer bus pickup for students. However, we are convenient to the Q12 and Q15 bus lines. We also have a large parking lot for families who drive.

— Is lunch provided?

We offer a free hot lunch option, through the Red Rabbit food service company. They provide a variety of healthy meals with lean proteins (no pork or fish), vegetables, and whole grains. You may also opt to send in a lunch with your child; no chips or candy, please.

— Are you a nut-free school?

Although we are not a nut-free school, we make every effort to ensure the safety of students who have food allergies of any sort. All of our staff are certified in first aid, CPR, and Epi-Pen use. If you have any concerns, please feel free to speak to Mr. C or to our administrative staff.
